To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
  • Develop a PICO(T) question to address the clinical issue of interest you identified in Module 2 for the Assignment. This PICOT question will remain the same for the entire course.
  • Use the key words from the PICO(T) question you developed and search at least four different databases in the Walden Library. Identify at least four relevant systematic reviews or other filtered high-level evidence, which includes meta-analyses, critically-appraised topics (evidence syntheses), critically-appraised individual articles (article synopses). The evidence will not necessarily address all the elements of your PICO(T) question, so select the most important concepts to search and find the best evidence available.
  • Reflect on the process of creating a PICO(T) question and searching for peer-reviewed research.

The Assignment (Evidence-Based Project)

Part 2: Advanced Levels of Clinical Inquiry and Systematic Reviews

Create a 6- to 7-slide PowerPoint presentation in which you do the following:

  • Identify and briefly describe your chosen clinical issue of interest.
  • Describe how you developed a PICO(T) question focused on your chosen clinical issue of interest.
  • Identify the four research databases that you used to conduct your search for the peer-reviewed articles you selected.
  • Provide APA citations of the four relevant peer-reviewed articles at the systematic-reviews level related to your research question. If there are no systematic review level articles or meta-analysis on your topic, then use the highest level of evidence peer reviewed article.
  • Describe the levels of evidence in each of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected, including an explanation of the strengths of using systematic reviews for clinical research. Be specific and provide examples.

Dimensions of Nursing Practice

Hello Everyone,

In a health facility, it is important to ensure that patients morals and values are being obtained. Many people come from different cultural backgrounds and it is crucial to be able to understand them and respect them the best way possible. You want to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable between the patient and the nurse. Its important to make sure the patient feels respected with whatever healthcare decisions they decide to make.

1.What values ensure a culture of safety?

Like in most situations, communication amoungs co-worker and patients is key to gather the proper information about the patient. It is crucial that we have a strong and well established team that makes working as a team a priority for every patient. We have to value everyone decisions and what they think is best for themselves. Culture plays a huge role in the patients decision making for themselves. It is important that as a team we work together to sustain a safe environment and to make sure everything is organized. Having great organization skills keeps the environment stay at a better state and avoids any problematic risk factors that can potentially harm the patient in any way.

2.How can healthcare facilities establish a culture of safety?

Some ways is establishing great teamwork and great work ethic practices. As nurses, we know to use EBP to ensure that the patient is in the best care needs from us. Working as a team will help maintain the environment the more nurses that work together the better the outcomes. Everyone in the facility should be promoting safety to make the environment welcoming.

3.What is the nurse's role in maintaining a culture of safety?

We all know that every hospital is going to have different set of rules depending on the state and region. Although, most hospitals will have very similar rules that nurses and medical professionals must follow. Many of these hospitals have to follow government advised rules like using EBP for every patient. I still think every single nurse should be educated in different cultures to understand every patient and for them to be well respected. Nurses play a huge role in taking proper care of each unique individual. Actively being part of ANA, taking every protocol seriously and maintaining a safe work environment for other staff and for the patient. As nurses, we play a vital role in creating a culture of safety within our clinical work area by maintaining an open line of communication with our healthcare team members, assessing our peers' and our own professional work habits and behaviors for safety risks, utilizing evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions in our patient protocols, and participating in shared governance workgroups (Davis,2017).

In a health facility, it is essential to produce the culture of safety. It is important for workers within the healthcare facility to have respect for one another, especially for everyone to feel safe with each other. Not only that, but it's crucial for a facility's culture to support and promote patient safety.

1. What values ensure a culture of safety?

After reading, I have learned that there are various values that ensure a culture of safety. One example is the value of teamwork. The team needs to work together in order to provide each patient with a consistent safe experience. Another value is respect. As I mentioned earlier it is important for healthcare workers to respect one another but it is just as important for healthcare workers to be nothing but respectful to their patients. Another value includes organization and planning. It is important to acknowledge what can cause the culture of safety and plan accordingly.

2. How can healthcare facilities establish a culture of safety?

Some examples include teamwork by healthcare workers. It is important for leaders to be visibly committed to change. It is also essential for the full staff to openly share safety information with one another. Everyone should be on the same page of promoting patient safety.

3. What is the nurse's role in maintaining a culture of safety?

I understand that every health facility is ran differently and has different standards. I believe though, that every nurse should maintain a culture of safety. I feel that they have a crucial role because they are the main caregivers of the patients when they come to the facility. The patient is allowing the nurse to take care of them by putting a lot of trust in them. Due to this trust, nurses need to make it a goal to keep them safe at all times. The nurses are in control as far as safety because they are aware of the facility and regulations. If the nurse does a successful job at maintaining a culture of safety, it will create a safe and trusting experience between the nurse and the patient.

Nutrition in Healthcare

Discussion 1

Every day, people make choices that affect their physical health and wellness. Some choices are influenced by the environment and social factors, which in turn contribute to people’s health outcomes. Healthcare professionals (i.e., physicians, nurses, dietitians, sports medicine, etc.) are responsible for their own health by making decisions and practicing behaviors that enhance their wellbeing. Healthcare professionals also have a responsibility to their clients. While responsibilities may vary among healthcare professionals, it is important the healthcare team is alert to clients’ nutrition problems and needs.

Discussion 2

Carbohydrates have received a bad reputation, especially when it comes to their role in weight gain. All carbohydrates are not bad and the primary role of carbohydrates in the body is to supply the cells with glucose for energy. One type of carbohydrate is sugar. Some people are unaware that instead of avoiding all sugars, they can choose to include natural sugars found in vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruit. On the other hand, most people know that too much fat poses health risks, but may be surprised to learn that too little does, too.

After studying

Module 2: Lecture Materials & Resources
, answer the following:

1. Navigate to My Plate:

https://www.myplate.gov/Links to an external site.
 and to the Diabetes Plate:

4. Explain the differences between high-quality and low-quality proteins, and well-balanced vegetarian diets.

Discussion 3

The body manages its energy supply with amazing precision. Consider that many people maintain their weight within about a 10- to 20-pound range throughout their lives. How do they do this? How does the body manage excess energy? How do bones, muscle, fat, fluid, and other tissue influence our body composition? However, overweight, and underweight both result in energy imbalance. Almost 42% of adults aged 20 and above are overweight placing them at risk of developing chronic diseases that affect quality of life.

After studying

Module 3: Lecture Materials & Resources
, answer the following:

1. Conduct a nutrition/survey interview with 2 athletes and ask them a) what protein or amino acid supplements they use in their diet? and b) why do they use those supplements? Then, navigate to:

www.quackwatch.orgLinks to an external site.
and enter the name of the supplement. Provide 1 paragraph with your analysis of the products and what you found out about the products’ nutritional characteristics (see Chapter 5, page 132 of your textbook).

2. Search the internet for a popular weight-loss program (i.e., Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, etc.), and submit 1 paragraph with the following:

3. In 1 paragraph, describe type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes by providing:

A. characteristics

B. definition

C. causes & symptoms (see Chapter 20, Table 20.2, page 564 of your textbook).

health care statistics. IP4

Statistics play an important role in the management of health care organizations and in decision making and strategic planning. Collecting, analyzing, and utilizing data appropriately impacts financial management of the organization and the quality of patient care delivered. Decisions in clinical medicine are driven by evidence-based practice, as are those in health care management. A health care manager must understand and use evidence in making informed decisions that improve the operations and financial status of the organization as well as deliver quality of care accessible to those who need it and with consideration of the costs involved.

In this assignment, you will choose a utilization review statistic from the following list and review a research  or government publication, as outlined below.

Choose a health care statistic that health care managers would use, such as one of the following:

  • Hospital-acquired condition (HAC)
  • Emergency department visits
  • Labor and delivery suite usage
  • Ambulatory surgery procedures
  • Hospital death rates
  • Cesarean-section rate
  • Wait time
  • Adverse drug events

Research your chosen statistic, and provide information from an outside source—such as a journal article, accreditation agency report, government site, and so forth—that discusses the health care statistic in a real-life setting or situation.

in APA format that discusses the following:

  • What was the reason for the research that was performed or for the data being collected?
  • What was the source of the data presented?
  • What types of descriptive statistics and graphical representations of data were used?
  • What were the research question(s) and the significant findings of the article?
  • How could the information presented be used to inform decisions or improvements?

Cite references using APA format, and remember to include a citation for the article that you are describing.

Careers in Nursing and as an Anesthesiology Assistant

After reading the provided articles and listening to our guest speakers discuss careers in nursing, you may be surprised to learn how many options nurses have in terms of careers beyond the typical hospital bedside. You find nurses in advanced practice as nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists, as well as in academics, public health, administration, informatics, politics/government, consulting and a variety of practice settings beyond the hospital.

In this discussion board, share your reaction. You must specifically address the following two questions (and follow-up) in your response:

  1. What was something specific that you learned that you didn’t know before? Which source did you learn it from (e.g., which reading or which guest speaker)?
  2. Did the wide variety of nursing options surprise you?

After stating whether you were surprised about the variety, address at least one of the following:

  • Why do you think nurses have so many options when it comes to careers beyond direct patient care?
  • What aspects of their training do you think prepares them for these many options?
  • Do you think any other graduate careers have as many options and why/why not?

Feel free to post any other thoughts related to this topic. Responses may be only one paragraph, but no more than two.

After posting your response, read your peers’ thoughts and reply to at least one classmate.

The good over the bad

Can I please get some assist with this question?

Last Discussion 8

Go back to the discussion topic in Week 1 and review your discussion posts.

Have any of your thoughts or concepts of trends in nursing have changed since week 1.  Please share specific examples.

BELOW IS MY POST FROM WEEK 1:

When I think of issues and trends in nursing, I think of how there are constant changes in the management of patients and healthcare facilities based on the prevailing social, technological and economic changes. Issues and trends in nursing are patterns, development and changes that occur in the healthcare sectors to enhance the delivery of care services. Nursing issues and trends encompass a wide range of issues depending on the challenges the nursing sector faces at a particular time.

Issues and trends have affected nursing regulations and policies, particularly in the United States. Constant amendments and changes of policies and laws affecting nurses are crucial to ensure that healthcare personnel work within the framework of the law. The national, state and country are changed to fit international laws and policies. Nurses across the globe should be updated on the current issues and trends in nursing policies and regulations to comply with patient care.

Due to technological advancement, nurses must continue implementing new technologies to enhance data storage and real-time retrieval of patients’ medical care to facilitate care based on evidence-based information. The current trends in implementing advanced technologies in the nursing sector are in the right direction. For instance, implementing electronic health records (EHR) has improved communication and collaboration between nurses, particularly during patient complications and medical errors through the Internet.

I understand that the nursing sector is dynamic and influenced by other factors such as social, economic and politics of not only countries but the entire world. In this regard, nurses keep changing their methods, laws, policies, and techniques to handle patient challenges.

A HISTORY OF NURSING ETHICS

The Nuremberg trials at the close of WWII offered disturbing questions. How can “good” people in traditionally honor-bound professions become complicit in some of the worst violations of humanity in history? What happens when individual professionals are not held to account by their peers, professions, and society as a whole? The trials showed how moral individuals within organizations can engage in morally “wrong” functions. “I was just following orders,” complicit healthcare providers, doctors, and nurses claimed.

Morality refers to principles that help determine what is “right” and what is “wrong.” Ethics is the related field that puts these principles to work to:

apply moral principles to choose “right” actions,

conduct relationships in an ethical manner, and

manage situations where a “right” action is clear but for some reason not possible.

Read the ethical dilemma below and explain your response and actions:

Nurse Is Instructed to Have Patient with Low Literacy Level to Sign Consent for Treatment

Scenario: Nurse Gloria is instructed by the attending physician to have Mr. Isaacs sign a consent form before a scheduled colonoscopy. As Nurse Gloria goes over the form with the patient, she notices he seems confused and is unsure where or how to sign the paperwork.

Ethical Dilemma: It is common for nurses to be the ones to get signatures on consent forms, especially for procedures like the one described in this scenario. When faced with a situation like the one here when the nurse is not sure that the patient understands what he is being told or if he can read, the decision of whether to delay a busy schedule to have the doctor come back and talk to the patient or explain to the best of her knowledge and get the patient’s signature may seem difficult to make.

Please adhere APA format when formulating response and action should incorporate EI and your actions and priorities and the EBP behind your decisions.
