Sample Outline for Concept Analysis Paper

See chapter 3 in McEwen and Wills. Use the method by Walker and Avant Box 3-1 ( p 60

I. Title Page: Select one of the following topics

a.
Advanced Practice Competency: A Concept Analysis

b.
Diversity in Nursing: A Concept Analysis

c.
Social Determinants of Health: A Concept Analysis

Format Outline(s)

II. Introduction (
Using Walker and Avant)

a. What is the concept selected-state and define the terms

b. Aims or purposes of this analysis-why are you doing the analysis?

c. Discuss all possible uses of the concept briefly-how is the concept used in different contexts, examples and then how are you using it for this paper

d. Determine the defining attributes-regardless of where it exists, what are the common identifiers that the person has this characteristic

e. Identify a model case-Use the attributes you’ve identified and highlight them in a case. A case that is hypothetical, from a text, or that you have experienced in practice.

f. Identify a borderline case and contrary case-what is a case that is something like the model case, but misses some attributes

g. Identify antecedents and consequences-what happens before the concept instance is identified; what happens as a result of acquiring it?

h. Define empirical referents- how do you know that what you are seeing is really it? How would you measure it? Or know that you are reserving it?

Discussion

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

· OpenStax Textbook: Chapter 1

· Lesson 1 Reading

· Minimum of 1 scholarly source AND one appropriate resource such as the textbook, math video and/or math website

In your reference for this assignment, be sure to include both your text/class materials AND your outside reading(s).

Initial Post Instructions

1. Present two different types of data, or variables, used in the health field. Examples could be blood pressure, temperature, pH, pain rating scales, pulse oximetry, % hematocrit, minute respiration, gender, age, ethnicity, etc.

2. Classify each of your variables as qualitative or quantitative and explain why they fall into the category that you chose.

3. Also, classify each of the variables as to their level of measurement–nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio–and justify your classifications.

4. Which type of sampling could you use to gather your data? (stratified, cluster, systematic, and convenience sampling)

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least one peer. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.

Your responses to other students can explain additional analyses that could be done with the variables they selected. Consider confounding variables, discrete or continuous data, the effects of outliers, etc.

Course Outcomes

CO 1: Given scenarios supported by population data, apply sampling techniques and explain potential pitfalls and bias in data collection.

CO 2: Given datasets with qualitative and quantitative data, differentiate between the types of data and how they can be applied in statistical studies for everyday life.

**Remember to use the Chamberlain Library (

T.J., a 30-year-old African American client, is in his last year of law school and is clerking for a prestigious law firm. He and his fiancé plan to marry as soon as he graduates. During the last week he has had four dizzy spells and a headache at the base of his skull upon awakening for the last 2 days. His father has a history of hypertension, so T.J. is aware that his symptoms may indicate high blood pressure. On his way home from work, T.J. stops by the clinic and asks the nurse to check his blood pressure. The nursing assessment yields the following data.

Subjective data: States he has had four dizzy spells and has awakened with a headache in the occipital lobe the last two mornings. T.J. has 1 glass of wine at lunch and 2-3 beers in the evening to relax from the tension of school and work. Most of his meals are at fast-food establishments and have a high fat content. T.J. does not smoke. He used to jog 4 mornings a week but quit when he started clerking. He has had nocturia for the last 3 weeks. He is not taking any medication. T.J. states he is concerned about having hypertension because he does not want to take medication.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1.What are the benefits and the challenges of offering group psychotherapy services within both inpatient and outpatient clinical environments?

2.Discuss key components of group process that occur during all phases of group development, giving examples of patient-focused activity that occurs during each phase.

3.Describe how various theoretical orientations could be used when leading short-term group psychotherapy. What patient populations or clinical presentations would be best served by each theoretical framework.

4.Discuss the benefits and challenges of using one or two group therapists during a psychotherapeutic intervention.

5.Discuss the importance of identifying ground rules, especially in relation to confidentiality for group psychotherapy services.

6.Describe how group psychotherapy differs from individual psychotherapy and describe the types of patients who might be better served by group psychotherapy.

7.Identify a specific group you would like to lead in your practice and discuss the purpose, your target population, how you would screen and recruit participants, establishing a fee schedule, the time frame (open or closed), number of participants, theoretical orientation for the group, selection of a co-therapist or why you do not want a co-therapist, marketing and advertising, and length of each session.
